007 - Inventory

 54 pages and hundreds of parts.  Factory Five suggests going through every box and taking full inventory of all the parts to both familiarize yourself with everything and to make sure nothing is missing. 

This step of the process was oddly satisfying, and while most of the parts were easy to identify there were a few mystery pieces that took a minute and some internet searching to decipher.  The box with the side pipes?  Easy, check.  The box with thousands of fasteners... that one took a moment.  Also while I have worked on cars, I've never touched the HVAC system so that entire section was a little confusing.

There are now a variety of boxes scattered all over the garage, but we've done our best to label and catalog all the parts so when it comes time to install we should be able to located them.




Fortunately I had some willing helpers for this task, which went smoothly with only a few parts not included.  Elizabeth was especially helpful in adding labels to unmarked parts and updating quantities if something was off.  There are still an assortment of back ordered pieces that will slowly make their way to our door over the next month or two.  We've already received and inventoried one of those boxes.







Next up to be delivered is the certificate of origin and VIN plate for when it comes time to inspect and register the completed vehicle.

I sent the "Missing In Kit" list to Factory Five, and now that part of the process is complete.

And now.  Now the real fun can begin.  Now we get to build a car.

Now that we all had seen a Daytona Coupe in person it was time to go for a ride in one. 002 - Drivetrain

This part is out of order, and usually comes much later in the build.  But there's a reason which will become evident as we begin. We contemplated building an engine from the block up but that quickly became complicated due to registration and emissions.  It's not all that interesting but it involved buying a running pre-emissions vehicle and crushing it before registering our Daytona Coupe.  Seems like unnecessary nonsense.  The more achievable path became a crate motor from Ford Performance.  A Gen III Coyote 5.0 Liter V8.  Or what's found in modern Mustangs.  Comes with an OBD II Port for diagnostics that all modern vehicles have.  Along with that we picked up a Tremec T56 6 speed manual transmission and some other odds and ends to assemble the whole package. 001 - Introduction

Myself aged 5 won't be that far removed from myself at age 50. One adorable little brain enamored by all things wheeled since first holding a matchbox car.  Motorized or not, as long as the means of propulsion is a wheel.  Boats boring, Planes boring, but cars, bikes, motorcycles, tractors, scooters, and so on.  Amazing. Cars are freedom, my heart desires to wax eloquent, but there's nothing to say not already been said.  The best of what we can manufacture wrapped up in one package. Mechanical, electrical, upholstery, form, aerodynamics, and art in the best cases.  Some merely conveyances, but the best grab hold of hearts and dreams and become more than mere transportation.
